IS SELF IMPROVEMENT IMPORTANT? - by Garry Zancanaro

Many people have goals, dreams or ambitions but don’t know how to go about achieving them. They may have thought about what would make up their ideal life, but have no idea how to even begin to make the plans and take the actions required to make them a reality.

Some people have a vague idea of their ideal life, and believe that if only they had a better job, or had been given better opportunities, or met the love of their life, or whatever else, everything would be fine and they would be happy. They feel that their happiness or lack of happiness is decided by external factors and their thoughts and actions are of little consequence.
Some believe that if only they had more money they could have whatever they want and would be happy. They may have spent little time thinking about what they actually want from life, and don’t really believe there is anything they can do to create their fuzzy version of utopia anyway, apart from buying more lottery tickets.
Other people don’t even know what they actually want from their lives and may even have little idea what would really makes them happy. They seem to just drift from day to day, week to week, month to month, and year to year, and do little more than just about get by. They may have seemingly secure jobs and be earning enough to live relatively comfortable lives. They seem happy enough and have no great ambition to achieve anything more from their lives than they currently have.
So is Self Improvement Important?
The reality is that throughout our lives we are all constantly growing and developing. Circumstances make us grow and develop, even if we don’t make the conscious decision to do so. Up to a certain age, we learn through formal education and we continue to learn through our experiences for the rest of our lives. We have to learn and grow to deal with everything that life throws at us.
Modern life moves at a dramatically faster pace than at anytime in history. For anyone living in modern society there are more opportunities to do anything that you want to do with your life than ever before. But there is also more competition than ever before, and ever changing technology means that there really are few, if any ‘jobs for life’ anymore. It’s now normal not only to change jobs quite often throughout our working lives, but even to completely change careers and/or industries.

Because the workplace is so competitive, people who are ambitious and hungry for success know they need to learn new skills and knowledge to keep ahead of the pack. These are the people that will be most likely to keep their jobs, or progress within their chosen field, or that will be readily employable in different organizations or industries.

An alarming percentage of people spend most of what they earn, and with the easy availability of credit, many also have large debts. They are often no more that a few paydays away from bankruptcy and have little, if anything, put aside for emergencies, much less for a comfortable retirement.

There are people who consider ongoing education essential, who think that in order to really feel alive, they must be growing, developing and learning. They may not be even be seeking self improvement as such, or looking to make any changes in their lives. They may just have a thirst for knowledge and feel that lifelong learning is a goal in itself.

Not everyone is that way inclined, but any person whose personal knowledge is not, at the very least, keeping up with the general knowledge and developments in their field, runs the risk of losing their job, and then having difficulty in finding a new one.

People who are ambitious and have plans for their future know that the most important and valuable work they will ever do is the work they do on themselves. To quote Jim Rohn - “To Have More Than You've Got, Become More Than You Are”.

Self Improvement is undoubtedly important, and anyone really can have anything they want from life, and be anything they want to be, if they’re prepared to make the plans, take the actions, and pay the price.

Time and money spent on furthering your own education, skills and knowledge will be the best investment you’ll ever make for your future. It’s been said many times that leader are readers. It’s also been said that any problem that you could ever have has been solved by someone, and that the solution will have been recorded for posterity. Whatever it is you want to know, you can almost certainly find recorded it in a book, on the internet, or in another medium. You can gain knowledge that would otherwise take you many years of experience and trial and error to obtain simply by reading a single book written by an expert.

No matter what you want to achieve from your life, there is no doubt that the more books you read, the more audio programs you listen to, the more seminars or courses you attend, the more you will know about your specialist field or area of interest. You will become highly employable and earn more within your chosen field, or will be well placed to move into new areas, or to set up and successfully run your own business.

Only you can decide what you want from your life and what will make you happy. Nobody else is responsible for your happiness, your success, or what you make of your life. And nobody else is responsible for your lack of happiness or success, or if you do nothing more with your life than just about get by.

The important thing to realize is that it’s all your choice, and that your attitude to personal development, growth and self education will be one of the most decisive factors in how your life turns out.
